Bike enthusiast Michael Eidson, was competing in the "Hotter'N Hell 100” back in 1988, a torturous event soaking up the summer sun of Wichita Falls, Texas. Whilst planning for this event he noticed the lack of refill points available for water and if he was to compete at a high level needed that vital water supply.
Eidson worked in the medical trade and began to fashion the first prototype Camelbak out of an IV bag and a tube sock! He then stuffed that down the back of his cycle shirt and threw a hose over his shoulder, clipped it to his top and away he went. That was moment that hands free hydration was born, the moment you could drink and peddle.
Jeff Wemmer, a competitive cyclist loved the idea when he saw it and started selling them at races on Eidson’s behalf. Originally the idea was laughed at but eventually practicalities took over the thought process and now Camelbak is the staple of Mountain Biking and all round outdoor adventure. Camelbaks core values remain the same and drive everything we do - from inventing the hydration category to becoming the world's leading maker of hydration solutions.
