MTB Pedals are split into two broad varieties, flats and clipless. Flat pedals come in thin and fat varieties and feature grippy studs or pins on the pedal body. Clipless pedals come in various styles, from lightweight minimalist to those with a surrounding cage (trail pedals). Shimano offer several designs of SPD pedal to cover all riders, all use the same SPD cleats. Important things to consider with MTB clipless pedals are mud-shedding capabilities and the quality of the bearings. Shoe cleats wear down over time, when worn they can cause issues with your knees. Merlin stock pedals and cleats from the world’s leading manufacturers - Shimano, Look, Time, Crank Brothers, DMR and Hope.
