Garmin Sharp With a strong anti doping ethos, Team Garmin-Sharp have brought a breath of fresh air to the peloton with their fun attitude and attacking style as well as results. Biggest star on the team is Irishman Dan Martin who in 2013 won the oldest Classic of them all, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, as well as the Tour of Cataluña. Britain’s David Millar is riding his last season in professional cycling with the team and is doing his best to go out with a bang.

Astana Astana is sponsored by a conglomerate of wealthy state-owned companies from Kazakhstan and named after its capital city Astana. The star rider in the team is Italian Vincenzo Nibali who won the Giro d'Italia for them in 2013. He's one of the classiest riders in the peloton, not to mention one of the best descenders, a fact which is backed up with his many stage race victories with more surely to come.

Orica-Greenedge Australian team Orica-GreenEdge was set up along the same lines as Team Sky as a vehicle for own nation riders to race in the top tier of professional cycling, although unlike Team Sky, Orica-GreenEdge has a women's team as well. The team are known as much for their camaraderie and spoof videos as they are for their attacking riding style and impressive results..

Oemega Pharma Quick-Step If there's one team that was ever built to win Classics and stages it is Omega Pharma - Quickstep. Belgian legend Tom Boonen is the undisputed team leader for the Classics with his many wins in the Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix as well as most of the other cobbled races. British sprint star and former world road race champion Mark Cavendish provides the sprint wins in grand tours.

Belkin Pro Dutch team Belkin are the remnants of the infamous Rabobank squad who were one of the longest running teams in professional cycling. The mainly Dutch roster has always done well in stage races with several talented home grown riders. Bauke Mollema was the team’s best rider last year with sixth at the Tour and is showing well already this year. Former world cyclo cross champion Lars Boom continues to improve.

Lotto Belisol 2014 marks the thirtieth year that Lotto, the Belgian national lottery, has been a sponsoring a professional cycling team. Lotto Belisol is unashamedly Belgian in their outlook so the cobbled early season Classics are a big deal for them and the rivalry with Omega Pharma-Quickstep is always interesting to watch. Jorgen Roelandts is the main man for the Classics with a third place in the 2013 Tour of Flanders to his name.

Tinkoff Saxo Bank Sponsored by a Russian credit company and a Danish bank respectively. The team is built for the grand tours with a selection of strong riders used to pulling on different terrain for their leaders. The Biggest name in the books is Spaniard Alberto Contador who has won all three grand tours in his career. Has been off the boil since his return but seems to be coming back to his old form in 2014 with several early season stage race wins.

Giro D'Italia The Giro d'Italia is an annual stage race bicycle race primarily held in Italy, while also occasionally passing through nearby countries. The race was first organized in 1909 to increase sales of the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport; however it is currently run by RCS Sport.

The Tour de France The race was first organized in 1903 to increase paper sales for the magazine L'Auto; it is currently run by the Amaury Sport Organisation. The race has been held annually since its first edition in 1903 except for when it was stopped for the two World Wars. As the Tour gained prominence and popularity the race was lengthened and its reach began to extend around the globe.

UCI World Championships The UCI world championships are annual competitions to determine world champion cyclists. They are held in a different country each year. Championship winners wear a white jersey with coloured bands around the chest for the following year. The similarity to the colours of a rainbow gives them the colloquial name of "the rainbow jersey."
