    Road bike pedals & cleats

Clipless pedals have a sprung retaining mechanism on the pedal body. This mechanism holds on to a cleat that is bolted to the bottom of a specifically designed cycling shoe. Different brands have different systems. But thankfully almost all road bike systems - Shimano, Time, Look, Campagnolo - use the 3-bolt cleat design. This system requires cycling shoes with 3 holes on the sole. Clipless pedals made by Speedplay are the exception. These work on a 4-bolt design.
