This tire came from England to the West Coast of Canada in a little over a week - I can't even get stuff locally that quickly! We have lots of wet rock and roots where I live and the Hans Dampf Trailstar seems to be just the ticket! Thank you Merlin Cycle for a great product at a great price and prompt arrival!
Got it for Whistler Bike Park and the North Shore and it worked a treat in the wet muddy conditions and slick wet rock :)
I guess you get a lot of reviews of people saying tyres are this and tyres are that, I have in the past had people tell me about tyre choice and grip, but I know full well they ride like miss daisy. My friends tell me I ride like a loonatic and I can honestly say these tyres are amazing, I heard them growl a couple of times when I got all twisted off line on an unsighted landing, but they held on in there, my mates say I am a bad influence, these tyres are a bad influence on me.
Had this tyre on for about 10 rides now in various conditions and run at the right pressure it's got loads of grip.
What I don't like about the Hans Dampf is the drag, since putting it on from a Nobby Nic I can feel its not as fast but the increase in grip is massive.
Think this tyre would suit trail centers and the lakes but if your trails are more dirt I would go Down to a 2.25 tyre as this comes up more like a 2.5
Awesome tyre. Put this upfront with a rocket ron rear and you can go anywhere
Excellent tyres, can't comment on durability as have only been using them for a week. But the grip is phenomenal.
Excellent service and price can't be faulted
I've always been a 2.1 max tyre size rider. I've used Ralph's and Nic for a number of years now and they are amazing tyres, perform extremely well in pretty much all conditions depending on how you mix them.
However I now live in Oz and my local Xcode trails are very hard on tyres and in places are very technical with granite rock gardens and I found the Ralph's were wearing at alarming rate plus didn't offer as much protection as I'd like.
I rode with a guy who runs these Hans Dampfs and said they were good so I ordered a Trailstar for the front and a Pace star (slightly harder) for the rear.
The result is an extremely sure footed ride with tons of side grip that protects my rims from the knarly rocks and provide reassuring grip.
I can say I've noticed any real difference in rolling resistance, I'm sure there is a mild trade off for running a 2.35 tyre as opposed to a 2.1 but it's worth it.
Tread pattern is aggressive and I'd not use them on the
Rad as you can with a Raplh, but that's not what their designed for.
I'm running them tubeless with Stans sealant and they hold their pressure well.
My only word of caution would be make sure they'll fit your frame and fork, they are fat and are designed I believe more for DH rather than XC bikes.
Great tyres, highly recommended.
Easy 5 stars; I ride a Yeti ASR 5C, 90% of the time around the North Downs. I have a hut full of top end trail tyres and to date, all have fallen short of the mark. The Hans Damf looks big, but it feels good. I've read mentions of slowing rolling resistance, but I just don't see it. It's not a XC tyre and shouldn't be compared, but if it's a grippy, accommodating, aggressive trail tyre that you want, then this is the one.
I'm a strava addict and keeps me competitive in the speed V's grip stakes!! For me, these beat the top end Conti Mountain King (I've got both sizes) hands down.
Amazingly grippy tire for the trail, and highly recommended. The price paid for the grip and control is that they're slow on the road
As always Merlin knock spots off the competition. Ordered at 1400ish was here next morning at 1000!!! Great price too. Best online bike shop In my experience!,,
