Bought this at the lower price as it as end-of-line item. The fabric definitely keeps you dry and is quite good on breathability. I've worn it several times and I never felt wet or cold inside. I've only given 4 out of 5 as the wrist bands/cuffs are very tight and have torn already. Also, some of the hem stitching came undone and I had to effect a repair to stop it getting worse. Good value at the lower price, but I'm glad I didn't pay full retail.
Overall I am pleased with this Altura waterproof Jacket. Its not particularly breathable but does keep out water when riding in showers and light rain. I have not ridden it in heavy/ long periods of rain. It is windproof and keeps me quite warm which I regulate by opening the zip at the neck as it has no vents. The only fault I can find is the cuffs on the sleeves are quite tight and a struggle to get over my hands (not particularly big hands) and the stitching is coming apart at the cuff seams (both). I would suggest to Altura to re-enforce this area. I have worn this jacket approx. 8 times, cold wash twice, and overall, I'm happy with this purchase. Medium size fits great for my 100cm chest
I've been so impressed by the Altura Vapour jacket I've bought another one. Handles heavy rain with ease and is one of the most breathable waterproofs I've owned. I'm 5'8" and slim build and the medium is a perfect fit. I like the elasticated cuffs which I think provide a better seal than velcro. The jacket is cut long at the back which helps keep your backside dry. It is a little bit bulky but does fit in a jersey pocket without too much difficulty. If I have any criticism about the jacket it is that it doesn't have much reflective detailing on it so I wouldn't feel confident doing a night ride in it. There is some detailing but not as much as other jackets on the market. The Altura Vapour is excellent and at Merlin's sale price it is a real bargain.
Quality feeling waterproof, only had the one wet ride in it so far, and kept me dry -good fitting collar for me. I'm 5'9" & just under 13 stone and the large is snug - but not restrictive. Doesn't pack down very small and I found the stretchy cuffs quite tight. Great price though and arrived day after ordering from Merlin.
A great lightweight waterproof jacket. Snug fitting but that is what I wanted. A no brainer at the discounted price - if you haven't got one yet, get one.
Overall I'm fairly happy with the jacket. Having been out in pretty heavy, prolonged rain the stretchy, waterproof fabric has kept me bone dry beneath. I ordered a large (probably realistically somewhere between a L and XL) which is close fitting around the body but a good fit in terms of arm length. However I have noticed small tears developing at the ends of the sleeves near the seams on both arms which - considering I've only been out in it roughly half a dozen times - isn't great. This kind of wear I'd fully expect to see after around 6 months or so.
It seemed fine but the XXL was too short for my husband who is 6.3ft and rather rotund!
Good Jacket Overall if you can get it for the reduced price. Tried in both dry and dry-damp conditions (tried in puddle prone country lanes for 10 miles) and kept the kick up of dirt and water from my back wheel off my jersey which was good. The breath-ability is good but not perfect as you still get a buildup of sweat on the inside but it's not too bad at the end of a ride. The back pocket is big and very deep which I used for my gels (4/5) and a back light with plenty of space left over. Due to the close fit I could also have the rear pocket half open, clip the light to the pocket and still have the things in the pocket safe from being thrown out with the light feeling solid to my back. I found also that this jacket worked well in the wind after doing a TT type section of my ride (5 mile flat stretch of road with a solid 10 mile per hour headwind), it may have been just by chance but I took 10 seconds from my previous time. The highlight has to be the fit: being 6'3 (34 inch arm length, 15 inch collar) it's always a pain trying to find jackets that perfectly fit but this one in medium really fit well, with the cuff managing to cover the strap on my gloves so there was a full seal from the elements. In the torso too it fit perfectly with respect to the fitting on the back and front. Totally recommendable to anybody looking for a lightweight jacket with good features including waterproofing, windproofing, good space for tools/food/etc and a perfect fit without the bank busting cost of other brands such as Castelli. 5 stars out of 5!
This is an AMAZING jacket. Windproof, waterproof, really warm looks brilliant too. Fabulous stretchy material that fits perfectly. Bought it after review in Cycling Weekly who gave it a great write up- glad I spotted that! Great price and usual Merlin excellent quick delivery and customer service. Cannot think of a down side for the jacket, best I've owned.
I fell in love with this jacket. it's very light and deals with rain, wind like a champ. Highly recommend it. and thanks to Merlin for excellent service. Received my package in less than a week at Istanbul, Turkey.
Great. Nice and tight fitting jacket. Keeps you dry and warm, also can be folded up to fit in your back pocket.
Excellent fit and has kept me dry in the rain. Does warm up a little bit. However, can`t complain with it. Well worth it
1st - Great price on the Jacket and quick free delivery A+++ As for the jacket in the rain - worked well this week (yes you might sweat a bit inside but what do you expect?). I had a large and the arms are perfect, only issue is the front was a bit short but that didn`t bother me as I don`t need a 44"+ in the XL.
Nice fitting though still a bit looser than I would have liked, but always going to struggle being tall and skinny with sizing , this is the best fit of the jackets I have tried on, yet to test in the rain
How BRILLIANT is this jacket!? I can not rate this highly enough. It is simply brilliant. When I first saw the jacket was stretchy I was extremely sceptical of its water proofing ability. It got well and truly tested last week though in probably the heaviest rain I have ever cycled in. Add to that an absolute drenching from a car through a puddle. Head...soaked. bottoms....drenched. shoes...physically poured water for them. Top...Completely dry. I had my phone in the inside pocket and it was completely dry too. Nothing came through the zip or seamsand no water was running down my neck thank to the tight but not uncomfortable neck with high collar and zip. I've found the jacket my go to outerwear until the temperature drops further and even then I'd be more tempted to use extra Base layers than a jacket on top. To top it all if it's pleasantly breathable too. I honestly can not rate this jacket highly enough. If I'd paid twice the price I wouldn't be disappointed.
A much lighter (more compact) jacket then expected...which is a good thing for stuffing in a jersey pocket when starting a ride when it's dry out, but rain clouds are looming. I haven't had to wear it in the rain yet so can't attest to it's waterproofness or breath-ability. Fit is decent (just a bit snug around the forearms, but then again I don't have a slim cyclist build)...ordering an XL for my 200lb frame.
I haven't ridden with this jacket in a downpour yet but I have used it in light rain and it beads properly. Would have been nice if there were zippers under the armpits but apart from that it looks great and fits well. I'm 183cm and bought an XL. Size L would have been fine too but since I bought this primarily for winter commuting I thought I'd keep some pace in reserve for the under layers. Very happy with this jacket.
Just excellent jacket to take along or wear. For windy or rainy trips.
Great quality and super light material without compromise on performance. Also long in body and arms which suits my frame. Overall a great jacket and a recommendation.
I purchased this for a ride I did from Edinburgh to Inverness. It lived upto its hype. Kept me dry in the rain. It did tend to sweat up if used over long periods 3+ hours at a time. Overall very happy with it. Recommend if you fancy a well made waterproof jacket.
Pleased with the jacket. Nice fit and fabric that stretches a bit which is unusual for an outer shell. Packs down very small. Not been tested in torrential rain yet but showers experienced to-date show effective beading of water rather than soaking.
The vapour jacket is a slim fit which is ideal for use on road bikes etc and the arms being long enough to use when on the drops. The other advantage over other waterproof jackets is that it can easily fit into a rear pocket of a cycling jersey. I've only, so far, used it once in the rain and it kept me dry and the breathability seems reasonable.
Very light weight, looks good, and keeps the wind and rain out also very good wicking
