How to get a bike via the Cycle to Work Scheme

bike 2 work scheme logoOkay, a quick survey if you wouldn’t mind.

Would you like to..?

  • Get fit?
  • Save money?
  • Help the environment?

If your answer to any of the above is “Yes”, and you want to get fitter, slimmer and healthier this year, then why not think about getting a bike. Cycling is undergoing something of a boom period, with some estimates placing the total number of active cyclists in the UK at 13 million.

As well as being a great way to increase stamina and cardiovascular endurance, it can also be a fun hobby and there is a huge social scene with clubs all over the UK. Bikes these days can be very expensive, and this can put some people off, but did you know you can save up to 42% (depending on your salary) of the cost of a new bike via a Cycle To Work scheme?

That’s right, you can save a chunk of money on a new bike and accessories and pay for it monthly, interest free, through a salary sacrifice scheme with your work. The money is deducted at source, usually over a 12 month period, meaning you save on income tax and National Insurance and you don’t need to hand over any cash. You can spend up to £1,000 on a bike and equipment to make your journey as comfortable and safe as possible.

What is it?

The scheme is part of the Government’s Green Transport Plan which aims to help reduce congestion, lower pollution and encourage healthier lifestyles and is proving hugely successful all over the UK. The scheme is not limited to any brand of bike or accessories so you can chose the best bike and equipment for your needs at the best prices for you.

How does it work?

To see if you can take advantage of this tax free scheme please check with your employer to make sure they are signed up to a Cycle To Work scheme. Providing they are, then you only need to fulfil the following criteria to qualify:

  • Be a UK taxpayer via the PAYE system
  • Be 18 years of age or over
  • Your earnings must remain above national minimum wage after salary sacrifice has been deducted

The money to pay for the bike and accessories is then deducted monthly from your earnings, at source, over an agreed term.
