{"id":2664,"date":"2014-06-02T14:49:42","date_gmt":"2014-06-02T14:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/?p=2664"},"modified":"2014-11-14T11:35:29","modified_gmt":"2014-11-14T11:35:29","slug":"leroica-britannia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/leroica-britannia\/","title":{"rendered":"L\u2019Eroica Britannia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re a fan of vintage bikes and lifestyle then L\u2019Eroica Britannia in Bakewell, Derbyshire from 20-22 June is the place to be.<\/p>\n<p>It is the British version of the iconic Italian Eroica event which takes place on the gravel roads of Italy each year and just like its Italian counterpart, it\u2019s not just about the rides on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The event is a three day festival of all things vintage bicycle related so expect plenty of multi-period clothing, haircuts and themed stalls. It\u2019s also a celebration of local food and drink so there\u2019ll be a wide variety of refreshments available.<\/p>\n<p>The actual rides take place on Sunday morning with a choice of three routes 30miles, 55miles and 100 miles so it\u2019s up to you how far you want to push yourself and your vintage machine. Entrants must abide by strict rules on which bikes they can ride and each bike is vetted before being allowed to start.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/erot1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2665 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/erot1.jpg\" alt=\"erot1\" width=\"592\" height=\"916\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/erot1.jpg 592w, https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/erot1-496x768.jpg 496w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 592px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 592\/916;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The \u2018rules\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>All bikes must have the following characteristics to take part:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>road racing bikes built before 1987 (not cyclocross or time trial bikes)<\/li>\n<li>steel frame (the only aluminium frame bikes allowed are VITUS or ALAN with glued or screwed joints)<\/li>\n<li>gear levers on the down tube (only pre-1980 bar-end shifters allowed)<\/li>\n<li>pedals with toe clips and straps (no clipless except Cinelli M71 pedals)<\/li>\n<li>brake cables must pass outside of handlebar tape (cables inside the frame is acceptable)<\/li>\n<li>wheels must have at least 32 spokes with a low profile rim (less than 20mm) and can be tubular or clincher<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But like all things in cycling there are exceptions so new steel frames with vintage characteristics and built with components meeting the above criteria are allowed. For the 30 mile route other types of bikes such as postman\u2019s bikes, general working bikes or leisure bikes will be allowed as long as they have the vintage characteristics described above. Mountain bikes are unfortunately not allowed. The organisers are very strict on the rules and anybody who arrives at the start with a bike that does not conform to the rules above will not be allowed to enter or if found on the course, disqualified immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Clothing is left up to the individual but everyone taking part really embraces the ethos of the event and dresses in clothing suitable to the period of their machines. Expect to see lots of wool jerseys, hairnet crash helmets, tubs round the shoulders and goggles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2666 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/erot2.jpg\" alt=\"erot2\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/338;\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Riding it<\/h2>\n<p>Since I\u2019ve yet to get to Italy for the main event, L\u2019Eroica Britannia is a great way for me to get into the vintage spirit and enjoy a few days out and a leisurely ride on a classic bike. No doubt there will be many stunning machines there from all ages so that leaves one question; which bike to ride?<\/p>\n<h2>Bike option 1<\/h2>\n<p>Growing up in Ireland in the 1980\u2019s every cyclist who was anyone had a Vitus 979 as that was the bike Sean Kelly rode. These alloy bikes were so futuristic, not to mention lighter, compared to the steel frames of the time and were distinguishable by their lugged and glued construction. I couldn\u2019t afford one at the time but like lots of middle-aged cyclists, I have since got the frame I always wanted but could never afford as a kid as a project to restore.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2667 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/erot3.jpg\" alt=\"erot3\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/erot3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/erot3-768x576.jpg 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/563;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I bought the frame only with a view to building it as a replica of the KAS team bike Sean Kelly had in 1986 (I already have the modern replica kit) which will allow me to just scrape into L\u2019Eroica Britannia with it. The only problem is that it is silver and I don\u2019t think Kelly ever rode a silver 979 throughout his career. Black, light blue and gold were his preferred colours but never silver, but silver was the only colour frame I could get my hands on in my size at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Stickering it up isn\u2019t a problem as the popular online auction site has a few people selling the complete KAS sticker kits. What may be a problem is the Mavic groupset. This was meant to be a long term project but with excitement building towards this year\u2019s event it may become a quicker than thought project with the repaint having to wait. This could lead into a whole new clothing dilemma which thankfully I have managed to head off jersey-wise at least.<\/p>\n<h2>CTC entry which includes heritage woollen jersey<\/h2>\n<p>I entered the L\u2019Eroica Britannia through CTC, the national cycling charity, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyclinguk.org\/\">www.ctc.org.uk<\/a>) who had a special offer for members wanting to ride. The event is \u00a370 to enter direct but CTC are doing a strictly limited offer of 20 places with a CTC woollen jersey, made especially for the event by one of the best in the business Woolistic worth \u00a3110, for \u00a3149.99 with the proceeds going towards their campaigning work. I\u2019ll also get post ride refreshments from their stand at the event so will be nice to have somewhere to sit down after. The jersey is a replica of their heritage one so at least it will go with any older style bike I end up riding, another crisis avoided!<\/p>\n<p>Having listened to many friends who have been to Eroica in Italy, I really hope the town gets behind the event over the weekend as much as the Italians do, or at least the stalls selling vintage stuff are as good as the ones in Italy.
