Designed for people who want to run a single chainring up front but still retain a decently wide range of gears at the back.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not adding a gear (making 10 speed into 11). It&#8217;s simply extending the range of your 10 speed cassette.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to replace a sprocket of your existing cassette and bung on a massive largest sprocket. It&#8217;s adding an extra significantly easier gear at your top end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Check your rear mech can cope with the increased range. The vast majority will be fine but if your mech is a of a Downhill variety (Shimano Saint, Zee etc) then you may struggle.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<iframe data-src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hEAASx8ipsI?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Remove the cassette lock ring using a chain whip, a large adjustable spanner and a cassette lock ring tool.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Remove the cassette from the hub. Sometimes this can take a bit of force if the cassette has been on there a long time. Try tapping around the back of the cassette with a flat blade screwdriver and a rubber mallet to get things moving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Take note of the position of any spacers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> While the cassette is off, take this opportunity to give it a really good clean.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3483 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/sprocket-out-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"sprocket-out\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/187;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> Remove the individual sprocket (probably the 17T) that you wish to discard and its adjacent spacer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3482 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/sprocket-on-300x118.jpg\" alt=\"sprocket-on\" width=\"300\" height=\"118\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/118;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> Put the Hope 40T-REx on to the hub, making sure you\u2019re using the correct spline location.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> DON\u2019T put a spacer on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.<\/strong> Put the existing cassette back on to the hub.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.<\/strong> Re-install the cassette lock ring with a cassette lock ring tool and a large adjustable spanner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11.<\/strong> Put the wheel in your bike.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12.<\/strong> Put the chain on the 40T-REx sprocket. If you find your chain isn\u2019t long enough, you\u2019ll need to put a new chain on (unless you have a few spare links of chain lying around that can attach). Remember that full-suspension bikes need a bit of \u2018extra\u2019 chain length, so a chain that fits around the rings but ends up really taut will still be too short.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3481 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/b-tension-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"b-tension\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/194;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>13.<\/strong> With the chain off the 40T-REx sprocket, adjust the rear mech\u2019s B-tension screw so that the top jockey wheel doesn\u2019t touch the T-REx but does sit quite close to it (5-8mm gap). If your B-tension screw isn\u2019t long enough, remove it and use the 20mm screw that comes supplied with the Hope 40T-REx.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14.<\/strong> You shouldn\u2019t need to adjust your gear indexing or stop limit screws but you may as well give the system a once over while you\u2019re there.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve not done so already, you should think about getting a new chain-retaining chainring for your cranks too. No more faffy chain devices!
