The truth is that it&#8217;s not that hard and it offers loads of benefits. It saves money, it&#8217;s greener, it makes you healthier and happier.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Just try it once. Cycle to work for one day.<\/p>\n<h2>Use your current bike<\/h2>\n<p>Use your current bike to give commuting a try. If it\u2019s a mountain bike then consider putting slick tyres on it. If your commute is shorter (under 5 miles say) then using a rucksack or courier bag will be fine.<\/p>\n<h2>Saddlepack<\/h2>\n<p>Put together a specific commuting saddlepack that you only use for commuting. That way you can probably charge them up while you\u2019re at work desk.<\/p>\n<h2>Bike MOT<\/h2>\n<p>Check your bike over at the end of every week. Check tyres for pressure and damage. Check your QRs are suitably done up. Check your brake pads for wear. Check your chain for rust or excessive grime.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/how-to-clean-your-bike\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=blog-30\">It\u2019s a good idea to clean your bike at least once a month too<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The day before<\/h2>\n<p>Take your clothes and shoes in the day before. If you\u2019re intending to ride in every day then take as many clothes as you can in at the start of the week.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to keep a spare set of clothes at work at all times just in case you forget something (underwear, belt etc) on a future commute.<\/p>\n<h2>Claim the lane<\/h2>\n<p>Ride at least 1\/3 of the way into the road.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers will give you more room when they pass, you\u2019ll be more visible, you\u2019ll avoid gutter debris.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3624 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/JN14_Cycling-Village.jpg\" alt=\"JN14_Cycling-Village\" width=\"700\" height=\"243\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 700px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 700\/243;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the increasing numbers of cycling commuters, drivers are getting used to sharing the road these days.<\/p>\n<h2>Behave like a car<\/h2>\n<p>Follow the rules of the road to get respect.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t go through red lights. Try not to undertake moving (or potentially moving) cars. If you want to pass, overtake.<\/p>\n<h2>Eye contact<\/h2>\n<p>Make eye contact with drivers at roundabouts and junctions to ensure that they\u2019ve noticed your presence.<\/p>\n<h2>Lock it up<\/h2>\n<p>Buy a decent lock if you can\u2019t take your bike into your workplace.
