Founders, Ian Weatherill and Simon Sharp met whilst working together at Rolls Royce Aerospace. It was at this time that they honed their skills and experience which enabled them to leave and start up their own tool making business called IPCO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"653\" height=\"400\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/hopePOcwride3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34821 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 653px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 653\/400;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The duo were also avid trials (motorbike) riders and mountain bikers in their spare time. However, the cantilever brakes on their mountain bikes didn\u2019t meet the standard of their motorbike&#8217;s brakes. With help from employee Owen Hardisty, they engineered their first cable operated disc brake for mountain bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward 35 years and Hope are absolute world leaders in manufacturing. Here&#8217;s a timeline&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"311\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/DH4_caliper_3.jpg\" alt=\"DH4_caliper_3\" class=\"wp-image-9305 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/311;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hope-technology-timeline\">Hope Technology Timeline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1985<\/strong> &#8211; Ian Weatherill &amp; Simon Sharp leave Rolls Royce and start IPCO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1990<\/strong> \u2013 IPCO moves from their small factory in Nelson to an extensively bigger factory in Colne named the \u2018Hope Mill\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1991<\/strong> \u2013 After a period of manufacturing brakes and hubs for themselves and friends, Hope Technology formed and put on sale the mechanical disc brake which started them off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1991<\/strong> \u2013 Hope create their first 6 bolt specific hubs resembling those of motorbikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1992<\/strong> \u2013 Hope hit the big time across the pond at the Interbike in the USA. All 14 of their brakes were displayed on bikes in the show room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1992<\/strong> \u2013 Sales start to come in from the USA. Hope setup an overseas office to service US sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1992<\/strong> \u2013 Investment is made in a CNC machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1994\/1995<\/strong> \u2013 Hydraulic brakes become a thing. Hope introduce their first hydraulic, twin disc brake at Eurobike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"288\" height=\"309\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.merlincycles.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/DH4_rotor.jpg\" alt=\"DH4_rotor\" class=\"wp-image-9306 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 288px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 288\/309;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1996<\/strong> \u2013 Many pro riders begin to use Hope hydraulic brakes regardless of sponsorship obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1996<\/strong> \u2013 Hope hit gold with their first Grundig Downhill World Cup win by Rob Warner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1997\/1998<\/strong> \u2013 DH4 downhill brake gains coverage at Interbike, Las Vegas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1997\/1998<\/strong> \u2013 Hope move premises again to Barnoldswick which had an area of 39000 square feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1999<\/strong> \u2013 Hope release the XC4, the World\u2019s lightest disc brake system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2001<\/strong> \u2013 Hope manufacture a 6 bolt sport hub which allows for fast, easy fitting of disk brakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2002<\/strong> \u2013 Headsets and bar ends are added to the range of products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2003<\/strong> \u2013 The Mono6ti brake is born. Using technology still used today, the one piece brake offered unrivalled lever sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2005<\/strong> &#8211; Hope begin to manufacture bicycle stems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2006<\/strong> \u2013 The Vision HID light is released. Hope capture another part of the market which is unrivalled. The publics need for a powerful light meant that Hope benefitted well from such a simple product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2007<\/strong> \u2013 Vented braking, wheel sets and LED\u2019s join the formidable Hope product range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2008<\/strong> \u2013 Another move of premises! Still in Barnoldswick, just larger with an overall area of 56000 square feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2011<\/strong> \u2013 Hope replace the Pro 2 hubs with the Pro 2 Evo hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2012<\/strong> \u2013 You guessed it, yet another move of premises. Fortunately, Hope are still located at Hope Mill in Barnoldswick. One of their most advanced brakes&nbsp;yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2014<\/strong> &#8211; Hope collaborate with Guy Martin on his Speed Series including the Fastest bike &#8211; 112mph behind a truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2016<\/strong> &#8211; Hope began carbon Seat post manufacturing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2018<\/strong> &#8211; Hope began carbon handlebar manufacturing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2019<\/strong> &#8211; Lotus and Hope Technology work together on the HB T Track bike for British Cycling 2020 Olympic bike &amp;
