Castelli Elemento Lite Cycling Jacket - AW19

The Elemento Lite Jacket is construction similar to that of an insulated alpine shell, with an insulation layer sandwiched between woven inner and outer layers. Unlike most mountain jackets, though, the woven shell isn't completely windproof. Castelli left a small amount of permeability.

The small amount of air that gets into the jacket picks up the moisture and evaporates it more efficiently than any membrane fabric available. The middle layer is a puffy insulation layer that we make in polypropylene partly because it's insanely light but also because it won't pick up moisture from either sweat or rain.

Features

  • 3-layer insulated construction with engineered air permeability gives our best combination of warmth, breathability and light weight
  • Japanese-made air-permeable woven-textured nylon outer shell with water-repellent finish
  • Polypropylene synthetic down insulation layer provides warmth while allowing full breathability without any water absorption
  • Plissé stretch panels on sides, elbows and wrists allow for close-to-body fit yet with full freedom of movement
  • 3 rear pockets with reflective gusset at bottom
  • Inner waist closure allows you to block out drafts (closed) or allow extra breathability (open)
  • Weight:422g
  • Temperature range: 0°-12°C / 32°-53°F
-- First item was defective, returned it at got my money back quickly. Second time I ordered it, the jacket was fine and is a perfect fit for me (normally I wear M, but ordered a L because Castelli...) Very comfortable jacket, but have not yet tested it in the cold
Mr Becher The jacket is very light and warm. The best part is it keeps you dry both from rain and your own sweat.
Mr Spencer I like this jacket and at reasonable price for a Castelli product - £250 would have been expensive! The jacket has volume - it is not a clingy, aerodynamic garment but it is also not flappy or billowy either! I am a leisure rider and it is very nice. I have only done one ride in it to date but it was when the air was 10C and it was perfect at this temperature - I bought it as a warm winter jacket and it was very good. It has purposely been designed to let some air through it as ventilation rather than just being a membrane ventilator such as Goretex. I would say it is very good - I was warm, I wasn't wet through! The manufacturer's temperature recommendation is 0-12C and I would say this is accurate - I can certainly see it being good for me down to 4C and I wouldn't go out in much colder than this to avoid ice. I always like to go for bright colours to try to be seen in poor winter light - the orange jacket is very bright. The jacket has three really good pockets on the back of it - useful for gloves, leg warmers, waterproof outer jacket etc to allow some temperature adjustment when out on a ride. I don't think the jacket would be that waterproof on its own but I have a lightweight Sportful Hot Pack NoRain ultralight jacket that is - and this easily fits into one of the Castelli jacket pockets. I am 1.75m tall, 65Kg, and for an outer jacket I usually go medium to allow a mid-layer if needs be. Castelli sizing is well known to be small and I have gone for large for this Castelli jacket - it is perfect for me so I would agree with the well-known size up advice. So, overall, a good winter jacket for a winter leisure rider and a good price from Merlin and with their usual first rate delivery and documentation. Pleased to recommend the jacket and Merlin
Mr Moffett This is a superb cool / cold weather jacket. It’s very breathable and insulates with padding rather than by blocking air flow. Fantastic for cold dry or damp days, haven’t tried it in wet conditions yet.
saag Perfect fit for 183cm/78kg (L). Can fit two thin base layers under
Mr Fowler Good fit if you choose a size bigger. Definitely not waterproof, however it is really warm and should be perfect for our Scottish winters, accompanied with a waterproof cape.
Mr King 78kg/186cm and L fitted nicely - snug but not tight. quite a bulky jacket. would not roll up and fit into jersey pocket for emergency use. Very well made. great value.
Wayne Normal advice of going up a size for Castelli applies with this jacket. I'm 6'. 38" chest and 78 kgs. However not as tight fitting as other jerseys. Room for a base layer or two underneath if needed. Really feel the cold despite using various base layers. First impressions are that this is a very warm jacket. Could be the answer to keeping warm when cold and dry and gets to 5 degrees or below in the winter. Will find out later this year!
Bike Dude This jacket is stellar. Wow. Not sure how it would fair when it's wet, but for cold dry it's nothing short of amazing. I wear a medium in real life, and medium to xl in cycling gear. I'm 5' 10 , 175 pounds with a 40" chest. I ordered an XL. It fits well and has room to stretch if I wanted to wear a jersey undr in colder conditions, though the arms a bit too long.
Andy from MK Really nice warm jacket. Fairly breathable and very lightweight. Comes up small so order a size up.
Mrs Park It's a good product and it's fast delivery. It's really light and airy.
Bushy Liked the look of this jacket a while back but was not prepared to part with £250 for one, so waited for the January sale to pick up a deal. I am 80kg and 5' 9" and opted for a large in Dark Infinity Blue, slightly roomier than a normal Castelli large but still quite a close fit for me. The jacket has a very warm and comfortable feeling to it, quite different to either a Gabba/Perfetto softshell or a Raddoppia fleece type. This feels almost like a minimalist Ski jacket, but way lighter. First venture out today wearing a craft long sleeve winter base layer underneath; weather was a moderate breeze off the coast, light drizzle and a temperature accounting for windchill of 2 degrees centigrade. Group ride of 50 miles at a brisk pace and within the first half an hour I realised that this is one super warm jacket. However It does breath very well and there is a subtle feeling of air movement through the outer shell, so it is definitely not a boil in the bag type garment. I could have done with a much lighter baselayer in light of todays temperature and more so the ride intensity. The light rain beaded off well but didn't amount to much so couldn't really test the water resistant level. If you run cold I would highly recommend this jacket for a winter ride, if like me you run quite warm it is probably not the one to wear when riding around threshold pace, unless the weather is well below freezing, otherwise it ideal for a steady winter ride. Nice jacket and very pleased with the purchase.
