The Vitesse D8 is a great value for money buy from Dahon. It is versatile and practical. This is the second model of this bike I own, after a 2012 Vitesse D7 and I am still very chuffed with it. I have to add that Merlin offers a very competitive price and their service was excellent. They responded promptly to queries and ensured that the bike was delivered on time to Paris, France. I'm a happy customer, thank you for the good service, Merlin!
My Dahon is the best gift I ever bought for myself. I have a Canondale Synapse and I am a road cyclist but my Dahon is so practical I use it everyday to commute, to go shopping, to do arrands. Just to see if my Dahon can handle hills I tried it on a 8% hill nearby and it was just so smooth and perfect. I am going to try a steeper hill with clipless pedals and road shoes, I am sure my Dahon will not disappoint. I might turn it into a touring bike in the future, I've read of a couple touring in Afrika with Dahons and I want to try touring with my Dahon.
If I am not on my Dahon then I am reading about it on the internet or stalking people going on adventures on their Dahos on instagram . I am so glad I have my Dahon and it just gives me joy and improves my quality of life.
Seat tube and stem are not silver like on the picture, they are black but even better, I like it all black. Stem is not adjustable like some Dahons and there is no pump in the seat tube. There is one thing that might require an adjustment is that when you are pedalling fast and you change gears, especially when you go up the 8th gear, chain falls off the chainring. I could not spot the problem what might be causing this. My Dahon was just a week old when it first happened. After some quick research on google I saw a lot of people facing the same problem with their foldable bikes. The back cogs are lower than front cogs and when shifting chain moves more. It only happens if I am fast or pedalling hard when I change gears and if it happens it is an easy fix. I do it with literally my two fingers so I just carry wet wipes with me because I am touching the chain and I get grease on my index finger and thumb. I didn't know that this was a usual thing with foldable bikes when I first got my Dahon so it was a bummer at first but at the end of the day it didn't matter at all. I try not to shift gears when I am pedalling fast. I love my Dahon. Just yesterday I carried a ton of groceries and a total of 20 liter water bottles back home and it was so easy!
The bike folds and unfolds quickly and at just over 27 pounds (not 24 pounds as is noted in some specifications) it is a snap to stick in the back of the car when we want to take bikes. We are planning to take our bikes to Europe this summer. By removing the wheels, pedals, fenders, and rack the Vitesse easily fits in a 27 X 19 X 12 suitcase. It took me about 45 minutes to disassemble it, and a little less to put it back together. Dealing with the fenders and rack took the majority of time.
The handlebar height is not adjustable, but the seat is. I am 6 3 my wife is 5 7, and we can both adjust the bike to fit us, even though I am a bit more hunched over than I like. We regularly ride the Vitesse 15-20 miles with no problems.
The 8 speeds come in handy. Even though most of our riding is done in the middle 3 gears the lower and upper ends have proved useful at times. The front sprocket is a 52 tooth and the rear cluster is 32 28 24 21 18 15 13 11, which with the 20 X 1.75 (44-406) tires gives a gear range of 31 to 90. That is almost identical to our full-size bikes except that the low gear is one gear lower.
We are very pleased with the bike and look forward to many miles of enjoyment on it.
Oh one more thing. We live in the States and the bike arrived in 3 days. It was well packaged and in perfect condition. Also, we did NOT have to pay any Customs Charges. The total price was exactly what Merlin had quoted. I am very pleased.
I love this bike. This is my first foldable. It arrived to Italy quite fast, it was 90% assembled, only had to put on the pedals, the seat and that was it. It was ready to ride!
Ordered a folding bike to use when travelling in my caravan. I chose the Dahon Vitesse D8 as it gave me the best value and features for my money. I ordered online after finding the best deal (by far) from Merlin and it arrived here in Australia in about 10 days. It was very well packed and arrived in perfect condition. It took about 20 minutes to unpack and assemble ready to ride. It is very well made, beautifully finished, rock solid when unfolded and with its 8 well spaced gears is suitable for just about all conditions; the solid rack is very handy (although my Ortlieb panniers will not fit it). It has been so good I have now ordered another for my wife.
Excellent upgrade on previous model: higher top gear means more speed downhill, while retaining hill climbing ability and light weight. And great value!
Really impressed with this bike. It is very simple to dismantle and reassemble. The bike took a bit of "tweaking" before it was ready to ride . It rides really well, managing hills as easily as my 21 gear Claude Butler.
Excellent bikes and a pleasure to ride. I bought 2 of these for my wife and I as they are easily transported in the boot of our car. Simple to fold and unfold and very comfortable. The purchase process was a doddle. We ordered them online on the Sunday, and they arrived on the following Tuesday. I contacted Merlin Cycles on the Monday for some additional information which they dealt with quickly. The bikes simply needed unfolding and they tyres pumped up and we were away.
I would recommend both the bikes and the company.
