Eddy Merckx Strasbourg 71 105 Gravel Bike – 2017

The Eddy Merckx Strasbourg 71 105 gravel bike is a capable and versatile bike designed to conquer off-road adventures and handle on-road workouts with gusto. This tough but lightweight gravel bike is made from 6069 Aluminium and is complimented by a comfortable carbon monocoque disc brake fork. Both the fork and the rear dropouts feature thru-axles to enhance stiffness and steering precision as well as eliminating the potential for any brake rub. This stiff, lightweight alloy frame is super-responsive and accelerates well on and off-road while increased clearance means you can run up to 40mm tyres without any problems with mud clogging up between tyres and frame.

The Eddy Merckx Strasbourg 71 features a dependable, precise-shifting Shimano 11-speed 105 Groupset which includes a compact 50/34T chainset combined with an 11/32T cassette giving you a wide ratio of gears that will allow you to climb the steepest hills with ease but won’t leave you spinning out on the flat either. Merckx has specced Shimano BR-RS505 hydraulic disc brakes on the Strasbourg 71 giving you secure, predictable braking even in wet conditions and a tough but lightweight DT Swiss R24 Spline disc wheelset completes this amazing build.

With the Strasbourg 71 you no longer need to stick to the roads, this gravel bike opens up a wide variety of terrain including gravel tracks and green lanes. Whether you’re heading out on an off-road epic adventure or are simply commuting to work on mixed roads and cycle paths in unpredictable weather the Merckx Strasbourg 71 will take your riding to the next level.

Although gravel bikes are a recent development Eddy Merckx was racing on the rough stuff back in the 1970s with the Strasbourg 71 taking its name from his famous Tour De France stage win which finished on gravel rather than a tarmac road.

This is my first gravel bike and I instantly was overwhelmed with its capability. I'm sure there are many capable gravel bikes out in the market but for the price and build, nothing comes close to it. Relentless search for buying gravel bike over few months and Eddie Merckx Strasbourg 71 is really the best within the price. The performance is very good and I can really endure long rides with it.
Have been a customer of Merlin, the staff are always friendly and helpful. This bike is a really good deal for the money, has a good set of wheels which are tubeless ready, the 105 group set is good as always with Shimano, bike arrived on time and was well packed, have been out on a couple of rides already and tested it on on fire roads and some single track and some particularly bad broken up tarmac the bike coped admirably, would recommend this bike as a great deal.
First 100km in. Bike does what it promised, price shows in nice detailing. Would be overly expensive without discounted price. 105 with hydraulic discs right groupset for the frame. Carbon fork feels very comfortable, frame light (for XL size alloy) and responsive. Especially good rolling tires. Will be used for commuting on paved roads and occasional gravel road riding. Still needs mudguards and lightweight rack to become favorite commuter.
