Reynolds Assault Carbon TL Clincher Road Wheelset - 2017
The Assault wheelset is a long-time favourite in the Allroads line up. The tubeless ready 25mm rim channel provides great lateral stiffness, low rolling resistance and a comfortable ride. While both light and stiff, it’s the wheels’ 41mm depth with our Enhanced SLG technology that gives you every aero advantage while riding in the wind.

Like previous reviewers, these Reynolds Assaults are my first carbon wheels and also my first deep(ish) section wheels. They really improve both the look and feel of my bike over the shallow, box-section rims they replaced (32-spoke Mavic Open Pro on Ultegra hubs). They feel faster punching into a stiff headwind due to the improved aerodynamics. In gusty crosswinds there is noticeably more buffeting than the shallow rims, but the front wheel remains stable and is not difficult to control. When climbing they feel lighter and more responsive, especially when standing on the pedals (they are about 300 g lighter). However, they do not get five stars as I did have to spend a little time adjusting the spokes on the rear wheel to get it perfectly true. I am sure it was probably within Reynolds stated tolerances but I am fussy, especially when the wheels cost as much as these. Also, unlike another reviewer, I found it rather difficult to get a new set of Conti GP 4000s II tyres on and inflated. There was a nervous wait as I pumped them up over my normal inflation pressure until the tyre beads snapped into place on rim. It remains to be seen how I will get on out on the road if I puncture with only a mini-pump to hand...
This is my first set of carbon wheels and they do not disappoint. Fast delivery, true out of the box and the Conti 4000s ii tyres went on with out using levers. Paired these with some light weight Conti tubes and definitely given me an additional edge in on the club training ride / chain gang and also in my first go at road racing. Super stiff so respond quick and track corners really well. Also reasonably lightweight means they are not sluggish on the climbs in the Peak District either. Reassured by Reynolds warranty and I will probably pay a bit more for 3yrs crash replacement too. Only negative point is that they dont come with wheel bags which is what you need when you are transporting wheels worth £500 each.
First pair of carbon wheels. Cannot overstate how much of a difference these make. Frustrated I didn't make the switch years ago.
