A nice light all rounder. Bought for my hardtail running these front and rear tubeless on wtb scrapers. When seated they come in a tad wider than the 3.0" spec (which I like). Find them to have great grip, positive feeling giving lots of confidence in turns. Also nice on tarmac and hard track, not too 'rumbly'. Not designed as a mud - specific tyre but performed really well on very muddy trails this spring ; aggressive side lugs bite well into the soft stuff while the slightly less knobbly central lugs give accuracy on roots and rocks. Wheels feel very light with these bad boys on. Weight saving of a kilo (!) when compared to my previous (also tubeless) tyres across the pair. Plus Merlin's discount price makes these something of a no-brainier for a plus-tyre. Will order a couple more to keep ready.
Despite being marketed as "TL Easy", this tire was the most difficult I have ever had to seat. I've mounted multiple Maxxis tire models on two different wheel sets, and all of those tires seated easily by just using soapy water to lubricate the bead and an air compressor to inflate. For this tire, I had to install an inner tube to seat the bead on one side, and after removing the inner tube, play around with the tire while inflating to get the other bead to seat. So far, there's been no oozing of sealant so it looks like it otherwise has good tubeless properties. The tire weighs in at a very respectable 765g; specified at 830g. After several days of having the tire inflated to the maximum rated pressure of 35 psi on a 45mm ID rim, the tire width measures an impressive 3.11 inches (casing) given the 3.0 specification. Weather has prevented me from riding this tire, but my expectation with this tread pattern is that it will perform well; I've been riding tires with similar tread pattern (Maxxis Ikon, Rekon, Ignitor). Hopefully the Snakeskin sidewall protection will hold up as well as Maxxis' EXO which has been bullet proof for the rocky (sand stone) terrain here that destroys thin-walled tires in short order. Finally, the Merlin price with shipping was only just over half the best price I could find here in the USA.
Awesome tire, great traction front or rear. Another great deal from Merlin !
