The Shimano 5800 has gone 11 Speed for the latest incarnation of the 105. The 5800 has been inspired by the innovations of the more upper end Shimano Ultegra and Dura Ace; you can see the technological influences across the design of the 5800 components. More advanced and lighter than its predecessors and with a more eye catching design, the 5800 promises high performance and is one of the latest cycling must haves.
Lightweight HollowTech II 105 11-speed chainset
Innovative HollowTech forged and anodised aluminium crank arms utilise a hollow design that minimises flex and keeps the weight low
The chainring teeth have been developed to work in conjunction with HG-X 11-speed chains for increased contact to provide greater efficiency and improved power transfer
HollowTech II allows the bottom bracket bearings to be spaced wider apart, enabling the use of larger bearings and an increased axle diameter
Can be used with Shimano external or press-fit bottom brackets
The system allows for easier installation, adjustment, and maintenance
Lightweight anodised SG-X aluminium chainrings for smooth and precise shifting
Why buy Dura-Ace when you can have this crankset for about 1/4 the price and except for a slight weight increase (insignificant really) it's just as good!
I couldn't believe it when, after placing my order from South Africa around midday on the Wednesday I got a call from the UPS courier on Friday morning at 11:00 informing me he was 5 minutes away from my office with the delivery! This absolutely made the experience for me. EXCELLENT SERVICE.
Swapped this out from an FSA Gossamer Pro Crankset on my Tarmac. This pairs exceptionally well with the 105 Front Derailler - better than the FSA Crankset. that came with my bike. Like the 105 brakeset I bought - cannot fault 105 for best bang for buck, and the Merlin price was, after much shopping around UNBEATABLE. Thank you team.
I had a FSA chainset on my bike but was not impressed. Fitted this easily and oh my god the difference is amazing. Great price and delivery from Merlin as well.
I recently decided to dump the BB30 bottom bracket setup on my bike. Press-fit BB30 bearings may make it cheaper to manufacture bikes but as a rider they cause too many maintenance issues .
I installed an FSA BB30 to Shimano conversion sleeves and an Ultegra bottom bracket. Finally, I installed the new 105 Chainset. The whole setup works perfectly, as I had hoped.
I initially considered Ultegra they look identical and the difference such as it is is a nominal weight saving but the cost difference is more considerable. I thought I`d save the difference and put it toward some other improvements.
Only one criticism; I`m so over black group sets, bring back silver.
Good, dependable and only a tad heavier than Ultegra.
Can't fault the item. I had a snapped chain ring bolt/plug couldn't find an outer chain ring to replace that was lower than the price of this. Merlin delivered promptly. No faults found.
Super-easy to install. Very smooth operation and this 50/34 is a nice improvement for me when tackling nearby mountains.
Side note: Great service from Merlin Cycles - nice, regular updates on the shipping of this package to the USA, and it arrived quickly.
Replaced the stock FSA Gossamer pro crankset that came on my Giant Defy 1 with this Shimano 105 part. It has only been tested on one 100K cycle but so far so good. Very smooth running. Also looks better than the FSA part.
Love this crank! Bought to replace non-Shimano crank on brand-new bike to match rest of drivetrain so now it's all Shimano 105. Very smooth shifting and 105 crank looks great too.
The best upgrade from Shimano Tiagra crankset. Light and easy to pedal. More power to the pedal. I need to upgrade the bottom bracket too.
I had an RS501 non-series crank that functioned quite well but wanted a 105 crank to match the rest of the drivetrain. Is it stiffer than the old crank? I honestly could not tell. Is it lighter? I'm too fat to notice. It shifts well and looks good though and that's all I care about.
For me, the 105 5800 line strikes a great balance between price and performance. This chainset is no exception. I've got it on my gravel bike as an upgrade to the 36/46 'cross setup it came with; as I use the bike as a commuter, the stock gearing was just a little too narrow for me. Anyway, it's performing very well. Price and service from Merlin were excellent as usual.
So far very impressed. Build quiality is as you'd expect from Shimano and 105 range. Installs easily enough and shifting performance is really good. Bought as part of upgrade from older Tiagra 4500. Haven't done enough miles to comment on longevity.
I purchased this crank for aesthetic reasons. My bike came with a 105 group set for the most part. The crank was the Shimano RS version. This new crank set looks really good on the bike and was very easy to install. Price was the best by far.
Shimano 105 performs every bit as well as Ultegra at a lower cost. These are affordable enough to let me try a couple of different crank lengths without breaking the bank. Shifting is flawless as expected.
Works superb at great price from Merlin. Needed a climbing chainset so got this.... I'd recommend this for anyone in need of efficient chainset on a budget.
I bought this chainset to help me in riding the local Darling Ranges. I also have the Ultegra compact chainset on another bike so it was interesting to compare the two. The Ultegra is a 2009 model and has been as smooth as ever since I purchased it. I have been reading the very positive reviews of the 105 groupset components so thought I would give it a go. I must say that I am very impressed with the quality and weight of this chainset. The changes from one chainring to the other are very smooth and I honestly cannot tell the difference between my old Ultegra and this new 105. It is black in colour and looks very sexy on my bike.
The 105 5800 series is such a step-up for Shimano, there is very little difference from ultegra. Have upgraded crankset/chainset on a few of my bikes from stock to 105 and can tell the difference....lighter, smoother, quieter....best value out there.
Performs as good as Ultegra while costing much less.. what's not to like? Best value for money groupset in the market.
This is the first crank-arm I have purchased and boy was I missing out. I recently upgraded from a 2x9 to a 2x11 and my first ride out knocked my socks off. What a difference this baby made! This crank-arm is light, sturdy and delivers. Ordering was easy and it was placed on my doorstep before I expected it. You too will not be disappointed.
I purchased this chainset to match the rest of my bike's equipment (and to release the chainset on that bike for another project).
What's to say?... It's well made, easy to install, and so far has given trouble free riding... Everything you'd expect from Shimano.
The price was the best I saw, and the postage was quick too.
The standard bearer of excellent value. Works great, looks great, killer price.
Very nice from Shimano as per usual. I have the 6800 crank on another bike and this is just as smooth with the dreaded upshift.
Having just upgraded to this crank which is running on a 105 5700 10 speed group set, I can say it works absolutely fine. In comparison to the standard comp 1 crank my bike came with from factory, this crank feels so much smoother when shifting in between gears. More importantly it feels stiffer and allows for accurate power delivery. Really glad with this upgrade and would highly recommend this to those who are in the market to upgrade their cranks. Great customer service from Merlin.
Feels light and I feel very little flex even when out of the saddle. Decent value as usual with 105.
Running on 105 5700 10 Speed groupset. Works perfectly. Upgraded from the non series R500 crankset and gives a far more positive and smoother shift. Can't tell if its any stiffer but there again I'm no pro! Great value and looks fantastic and not forgetting, great customer service from Merlin as always.
A solid crankest that was an exceptional value. Feels great under power and while climbing. It improved the chain line as well as the function of the front derailleur compared to the OEM FSA crankset.
This chainset which takes it's design cues from the higher end Dura Ace and Ultegra sets really is a thing of beauty. Lightweight, extremely well made, stiff and shifts like a dream. I can't see how much of an improvement the higher end stuff will give other than weight to be honest. Works perfectly fine with 10 speed too. Bargain!
Light and stiff. Feels miles better than my old Sora set.
I am very impressed with the upgrade from 5700 to 5800. I was not a fan of the 5700 chainset look. The 5800 performs great, it's very stiff and it looks great!
52T 36T is a nice mix for the chainset. They fitted up easily as long as you have the correct spline tool.
