Lee Anderson Very good wheel for touring. I bought this as a like for like replacement. The previous one only failed due to a 2,300mile tour where the hubs were not serviced and 3 of the ball bearings had worn out leading to the hub and freewheel getting bent. Next tour, I will service the hubs every 1,000 miles. It would get 5 stars if the freehub was a bit smoother.
Fat lad Bought this as a cheap replacement for my winter bike to ride 600 miles to Lands End. I'm 18 stone (115kg) and the bike was 20kg fully loaded. Fitted it with a 10 speed cassette using 1mm shimano cassette spacer. Wheel is double wall 36 spoke with spoke eyelets (so strong) but not light. Not that it matters at 135kg....Rim is drilled for shraeder valves but I used a presta adaptor (£1) as I only wanted to take 1 spare tube to fit both wheels. No rim tape so I used 2 layers of tubeless rim tape (£5) as I've had them blow out with a single layer. Wheel wasn't the straightest out of the box - probably +/- 1mm (so 2mm wobble) but good enough as I run mini v brakes on the bike. Loses a star because 1 spoke came loose after 400 miles but took 30 seconds to tighten back up. Smooth deore hub. Worth paying the extra for a named hub. Wheel was a bargain. for touring/hybrid/MTB. Too heavy for a lightweight racer but you'd have to pay 3x the price for a decent lightweight. Would definitely buy again.
Martin Good price and great delivery even in these times. Have now bought 5 of these double walled wheels from Merlin (front and rear) for all our family touring bikes. Although website says for 'light touring' we have used them for 2 years on longish summer trips (>1000k km each) carrying full camping/cooking gear much of which on gravelly tracks without any problems.
Mr Fairfax Needed a new rim, but Mavic have discontinued the one I have and this complete wheel was cheaper than new spokes, a rim and saving the old Deore hub. All round a great product at a great price.
Mr Piddington A strongly built quality wheelset ideal for daily use and commuting. Not too heavy considering they are 36 spoke wheels, perfect for my requirements.
Mr Wilkie I bought these as a replacement for the wheels on my commuter bike. From my limited use of them so far they are well built, true, heavy duty wheels that should cope with poor road conditions through town well. I guess they'll outlast a lot of the other components on my bike and I'd happily buy these again.
Mr Brown Absolute vfm. Roll well, straight and true out of the box. As good as any handbuilt pair I've had for more than twice the price.
Tom Good value wheel that seems solid / well built. I had the disc version of this hub on a Mavic rim and 'only' managed 10,000km on it before it gave up. It did have a hard life through winter though - I'll try and be kinder to this one and hopefully get more life out of it.
Mr O'Donnell Good looking, solid rim, and fantastic at this price. Spins true out of the box. Does not come with rim tape however.
Ian G Not the lightest wheels but a great replacement for my worn out Mavic rims also built on deore. True straight out of he box, only a couple of short rides (40 miles) but rolling very nicely. For the cost an excellent pair of wheels for my winter / commuter bike.
Mr Pitchford Exactly as described, and arrived quickly and safely - thank you. So far (20 miles, road and light off-road) it's stayed true.
Mr Baxter An excellent pair of wheels for a great price. Fantastic service as usual. Thankyou
Adrian Good basic strong wheel for touring/commuting
TT Usual excellent service from Merlin. I was looking for a set of touring wheels to rebuild a 74 Nishiki International as my daughter’s commuter and cruiser. Wanted a silver set so it retain the vintage look, can’t ask for better pricing and quality with the classic look.
Ian These wheels are superb for the price. I have done mine tubeless with 38 mm gravel tires, try at your own risk but they are fine. Internal 19 width is great for wider sizes.
Mr Auclair Impressed! Unbeatable price and quality, out of the box wheels are true and solid. I usually build my own wheels but this wheel set has made it uneconomically viable to do so!
Jeremy Charles This was replacing a Deore LX wheel /hubs which don't seem to be available anymore unless you have one built. This one was a good alround replacement with a downgrade to just Deore not worth splitting hairs about. Both wheels needed truing which my local bike shop did really well. Valve holes need the round knurled nut if using Presta tubes. Very good value sturdy non bling wheels. Using 32 mm tyres with no trouble.
Toby Good solid-looking wheels, I put them on my old touring bike, used for off-road, bumps and jumps riding with my kids, and I'm pleased with them so far. Slightly surprised the rims were drilled for schraeder valves, but I had a couple of old adapters in my cellar, so all's good.
Richard Negatives - wheel needed some trueing and the rim had seen some disrespect from either the factory or the post man, none of this was a show stopper though. description would benefit from having the width of the rim displayed as this is 19mm which limits lower width road tyres form being used. I run a 28 so this was ok. Positives - price, the hub, the width (very comfy) 700kms in and still true, so summary, great value and lost a star for the dings in the rim and wobble.
Davey M Good quality and seem strong enough. Yet again Merlin have a very good price
Mr kuak I ordered these and they came just the the way they were described. I cannot believe how affordable these are for the quality they offer. I was surprised to find QR skewers included! If you are looking for a simple and good pair of wheels to get you around or commuting then look no further.
Mr Sauvetre Satisfied! The wheel is a bit thicker than the previous one but it is still quite light and it feels robust, perfect for countryside roads that are not always in such a good shape!
Dr Healy A good solid budget wheel, suitable for continuous commuting or long distance touring. Nicely made. Seems quite true, with tight spokes.
Paul Budget wheels to replace worn out ones on a Dawes hybrid used as tourer/utility bike. Sturdily built 36 spoke wheels, acceptable weight and, from enclosed labels, machine built at the Raleigh factory. Minor downside for me is that they are drilled for Schrader rather than Presta, but it's not a deal breaker. Wheels well packed and running pretty true out of the box. Good value for money, and for 90 quid, I'm sorted for the next 9 or 10 thousand miles. Recommended.
