    Road bike gear levers

There is one main sort of gear shifter design on road bikes these days. Basically the gear levers are integrated into the brake levers. Sometimes the brake lever is a gear shifting lever, sometimes it's just that the gear shift levers lie flush behind the brake lever. It was Shimano who invented this breakthrough design and they called is STI levers. STI is now the common name for such a design even of those from rival brands such as Campagnolo or Sram. Technically Campagnolo call their design Ergo Levers and Sram called theirs Double Tap. There is another sort of gear shifter you will see listed in this cateogry and those are bar end shifters for using on aero bars on time trial and triathlon bikes.
