Established in 1993 by John Moss, Merlin Cycles are one of the longest running online bike stores in the UK.
Since our early days we have had an enviable reputation among cyclists for stocking a massive range of cycling equipment and offering it at great prices.
Merlin Cycles was initially a mail order business started in June 1993 by John Moss in the spare bedroom of his house in Whittle Le Woods near Chorley. A few months later the company opened a shop premises in Ormskirk, Lancashire. In 1998 Merlin Cycles moved to larger shop premises in Leyland.
Merlin Cycles spent ten years in the Leyland premises. During this time they began designing their own mountain bikes, including the Rock Lobster steel hardtails and then the Malt aluminium hardtails.
From an original concentration on the UK mountain bike market, recent years has seen the company switch to catering equally for the increasing road cycling market. Current Manager Andy Oldham claims a 50/50 split between mountain bike and road. In 2008 the company moved to their current shop, warehouse and office premises in Buckshaw Village, Chorley.
In 2012 Merlin Cycles began as sole importer of Dutch-based bike company Sensa. Merlin Cycles decided to forego their own brand (Merlin Cycles) in favour of having an exclusive UK deal with Sensa. In 2013 Merlin Cycles secured a £400,000 from HSBC’s International SME Fund in an effort to expand international trading. Merlin Cycles sponsor several cyclists including Jon Gildea, Bex Rimmington and Lydia Gurley.
How do we do it so cheaply? We buy in bulk to obtain the best discounts and we pass the savings directly on to you. It's that simple.
At Merlin Cycles we do things a little bit differently. We know there's nothing more annoying than an online retailer not having the listed product actually in stock. We don't do that. We say what we stock and we stock what we say.
Our warehouses are huge and they're stocked to the gills with top quality mountain bike and road bike equipment from all the most respected manufacturers.
We pride ourselves on choice, price and customer service. These are the core values at Merlin Cycles. If you’re happy, we’re happy.
Our mail order service is simple, reliable and speedy. After more than 20 years of mail order selling, we have it perfected. We also offer telephone back-up for any advice that you may require or if you simply just prefer to do things via a phone call. Not a problem.
As well as our vast range of stock and discounted prices we also include free postage on most of our products. This even includes European and worldwide delivery too (minimum spend applies for international orders).
Our Bike Shop
We outgrew our previous premises in Leyland and are now based near Chorley, just 5 minutes off junction 28 of the M6 or junction 8 of the M61.
As well as bulging warehouses and busy offices, our new premises include a sizeable bike shop. Our shop has plenty of bikes, parts and apparel on display. Our staff are friendly and knowledgeable. They're keen cyclists who are never happier than chatting bikes.
Our Handbuilt Wheels
Our custom hand built wheels are the best in the business. From day one Merlin Cycles established itself as one of the best builders of bicycle wheels in the whole of the UK. Test after test backs this up. Today we are building more wheels than ever. Once you’ve experienced wheels built by us, you won’t ever use anything else.
In 2000 we put together our first Merlin branded bike. We started with mountain bikes. These Merlin mountain bikes were an instant hit with both the cycling press and everyday riders. We’ve added more models to the range over the years and since 2012 we’ve been producing sweet-riding well-specced road bikes too.
We receive numerous requests for sponsorship and monetary/raffle prize donations from many equally deserving causes, unfortunately we cannot offer help to all. If you wish to apply for sponsorship in this regard send a detailed covering letter to firstname.lastname@example.org
Due to the high volume of requests it is more likely for a request to be picked up if it is something that stands out or is a bit different.
All applications will be reviewed periodically and we will contact you if you are successful. We wish everyone the very best in their ventures and please do not be offended if you do not hear back from us.
