Excellent bike. A bit heavier than my carbon road bike, but it makes a really good winter/commute bike. Great components, and comfortable frame. I`ve had a few offs, and I`m glad I was on this bike- no gear or frame damage. Hydraulic brakes and very grippy tyres work really well on rain and rough roads. They just don`t do much with sloppy leaves in the dark!
It's great. Glides up hills. Much better than my old hybrid.
An absolute steal for the price. Ordered for winter use and have done a few small rides. Bike is responsive and surprisingly nippy. The brakes are sharp and precise and the gear shifting is everything you'd expect from Shimano 105. Looking forward to some long winter rides

Purchase: mid January 2018.

Objective: Replacement of a touring bike and a mountain bike (no suspension). Both rebuilt and updated several times over the years. My riding is now 85% road and 15% unmade tracks/bridlepaths etc. I no longer do the full mountain bike thing.

Test over 3 months use: Weight ready to go including pedals, mudguards, bottle cage, computer, lights and bell(!) is 10.6kgs. A reduction of 18% on the mountain bike, which was the lighter of the two bikes mentioned above.

The 105 groupset including hydraulic brakes is a delight to use. Concur with all other comments about this kit both on this page and elsewhere. Frame and forks are very well finished. The finishing kit, bars, tape, stem, seat post are all very good. The bike came with a Selle Italia X1 saddle rather than the listed Pro Excel saddle. No complaints, I find the Selle very comfortable. Another reviewer has commented that the wheels are heavy. I have no direct comparison but can only say they stood up to the extreme weather of early 2018. The Durano tyres, which I had never used before, were a revelation in terms of grip and handling, again in the extreme weather of early 2018.

As a package the bike is light, has just the right balance of handling and sensitivity without being too twitchy. It has good pick-up acceleration, eats up the miles, has excellent braking and transmission (the 105 again), and is surprisingly comfortable for what is primarily a road bike. Although not a mountain bike it easily handles the unsurfaced and muddy by-ways that comprise the smaller proportion of my rides.

Result: The Axe7 Pro has definitely replaced both bikes mentioned above. (The touring bike has already been sold).

Conclusion: This bike is much better than the sum of its parts and is a joy to use. Factor in the price and it is excellent value. Merlin have got the specification and the result perfect. Finally, and most importantly, it puts a big grin on my face at the end of each ride.

Brakes good. Drive set smooth and quiet (Both Shimano 105 so should be). This bike is a very comfy ride and perfect for my 10 mile commute. I feel that it would also make a nice Tourer and comes with the eyelets for guards and racks. Not the most exciting thing in the world and you won't be throwing it around gravel tracks, but its plenty fast enough on the road and eats up miles - no problem.
Bike was built and arrived within 2 weeks of ordering, and I was kept updated throughout the build process. Not a particularly light bike, the wheelset is one built for touring and riding through the rough winter weather so it has a fairly high spoke count and a bit of weight too it. Bike feels good to ride, I'd say the best thing about it is the braking, you can really control your speed through corners and on descents. I've taken it out in the wet too and the braking is really impressive. Perfect for what I want it for which is winter training and the occasional panniered up bike tour.
I was looking for a new Winter bike and this fitted the bill perfectly. With disc brakes plus 105 components and 25% off the original price it was a no brainer. I had it with the mudguards already fitted so no faffing around doing it myself.. A week has passed and I've ridden it a few times and really pleased with my purchase. Smooth gear changing, reassuring braking and comfortable ride. Looking forward to lots of Winter miles in the next few months!!
This is the first time I've bought a bike online. I choose this after some consideration, looking for a winter all rounder for road and bridle paths. I've had the bike around 5 months in which time I've clocked around 1200 miles, with rides between 30 and 80 miles. I find the combination of frame, forks and tyres extremely comfortable. The frame dimensions (55cm I'm 6 foot) suit perfectly, whether on the tops or drops. The bike came with the optional mudguards fitted and they are superb, no noise at all, even on scabby tarmac. The front mudguard is fairly close to the road so there is very little spray from the front wheel. Build quality is very good both welding and overall finish. Internally routed cables add to the appearance and are completely silent! Good handling all round, with ride and feel akin to a steel frame. I find the new Shimano 105 11 speed, excellent, with smooth and precise shifting! This is also the first road bike I've ridden with full hydraulic disc brakes. I can't imagine going back to callipers after this! As a winter bike this fits the bill for me. Most of my rides are on country lanes which range from the occasional stretch of new tarmac to mainly muddy, rutted and pot holed surfaces. So good handling and comfort are essential! Overall I'm very pleased with the bike, excellent value for money and great service from Merlin!
Purchased as a dedicated winter training bike as had all of my wish list: aluminium frame, mudguard mounts, Shimano 105, disc brakes. The internal cabling is very welcome as well. I weighed it at 10.8kg including pedals, bottle holders and mudguards. Seemed to me a good compromise versus my summer bike. Grateful for the 32T "bailout" gear, though! Have done 3x 100km+ rides since receiving the bike and so far it's holding up well. I am 173cm/5'7.5" and bought the 53cm frame. It's a good size me and the kind of riding I do: long days and hard climbs. Serious racers might want something different (but would you be buying this bike, cracking though it is, if you were a serious racer?). Disc brakes: technically one may say not necessary for the road. But I am a nervous descender and at +/-0C with the possibility of ice around, the psychological benefit of having the discs is huge. Others will differ, this is fine. Might upgrade the saddle some time, but not a priority.
