Smith Front is 780g minus skewer (54g) with rim strip. The rim tape is marked c13 width though the rim is C17 and it's not the elastic kind, so there is zero chance you could fit a tube and not expose the sizable spoke nipple holes, so you will need a roll of electrical tape to back-up the rim strip (or the correct size of rim strip!). Front is 28 J-bend round spokes, tension okay-ish, bearings fine. Perfectly good winter/backup wheel. Note no tubeless rimstrip / valve is supplied.
Mr O Brien Ridiculously good value wheel, can run tubeless and is pretty light. My only issue is the rim tape, it's the same on the rear and it is too small. It can move around and lead to a puncture when your tube hits the spoke hole. A minor complaint considering the price. Wheel runs true and bearings smooth out of the box. Really well packaged. Will upgrade my disc bike with a set
Mr B Fairly true out of the box. Taken on a few 60k rides including a bit of gravel. Seems ok so far. No wear indicators. Good value
Mr Thomas Have now ridden 200 miles on these wheels this month and they have been excellent, even a little gravel too. They’ve stayed true, and the hubs have remained rock solid. The free hub sounds great as well. A good strong wheel and a little bit more aero. Very happy as a cost effective upgrade from the stock rims.
Mr Thomas These haven’t been on long enough yet, but the service was excellent, dispatched quickly and arrived exactly in time. The wheel was well packaged, came out of the box true, fitted straight on and even included a spacer for lower cassettes like my 8 speed. The rim looks great on the bike and I’m looking forward to some longer rides. Will definitely buy the matching front wheel from Merlin soon.
Mr Ritson Brilliant except for the rim tape. Had exactly the same issue with Alex rims when I bought mine and my wife's bike 10 years ago. I recommend the wheels, but replacing the rim tape is essential and should be factored in.
Mr Cullinan good true wheel, good weight for the price . Only let down by the rim tape and the finishing the spoke holes - sharp edges mean punctures!
Mr O Brien Bought this as a training wheel and it's pretty impressive for the cost. It was true out of the box, although the spokes pinged like mad for the first 100 metres when I first used it. As previous reviewer says, rim tape is narrow and spoke holes are big. The rim tape moved to one side on mine leading to a puncture. Haven't weighed it but not bothered at the price. It's stiff, rolls well and has a ridiculously loud hub which I like even if my mates don't. Can't fault it for the price
Aquido Actual weight in my case was Rear : 911 gram Front : 775 gram (Without Q/R) Rim bed holes are very big and rim tape that came with the set was rather narrow and was sliding sideways, I had to re-tape using electrical tape to make sure I do not get any punctures from spoke holes. Rolling is good, and chosen hub has a very high pitched sound. I have uploaded the sound on Youtube. Wheel was true out of box and spoke tension was acceptable. 3 stars for being quite heavier than advertised and for poor rim tape. I sometimes have to ride on pavements as some cycling roads are shared by both pedestrians and cyclists here in Japan, and loud hub sound helps to get me noticed by pedestrians!!
AndyW Good wheels at a good price, just what I need for my tow path commute. Front needed a slight tweak to be true but otherwise really happy. The hub is pretty loud in a good way.
john These are the best I could find at this price point. Rims are up to date with a little more internal width. Hubs seem solid and the rear hub has a nice sound to it. Would buy again.
Charl K Same as my review on CX28 disc front rim bed drilling a bit oversize. The chosen free hub was a bit of a pain to get a new cassette over. I expect a hard time getting it off. Can't complain too much from price perspective. The CX28 is a very nice rim. Pity about hole size in the rim bed. After some rough riding on bike paths the wheel is still running true. Wheel weight near enough as advertised within 5g.
Mr Smith The chosen brand hub has extremely noisy pawls while coasting. It arrived true but the spokes were not tight enough, it pinged a lot until I spent time tightening and retrueing. Otherwise I love the ride on this wheel once tuned up. It is solid with more spokes than my old animal r500 and 200g lighter.
Mr Cooper Bought these wheels for my girlfriend. They're nice & lite, solidly made & I can see them lasting a good few seasons. Only problem is trying to get them of her to have a go myself.
