Castelli Alpha Ros Light Cycling Jacket - AW19

Castelli call it a light jacket, but the comfort range is surprising. It dips well into temperatures where you might normally reach for a full protection jacket, yet the surprising breathability makes it still comfortable in temps when you may have worn arm warmers and a vest in the past. We call this functional waterproofing because while we don’t guarantee that no drop will ever enter the jacket, we promise you that this is our best effort to keep you warm and dry in the widest range of conditions.

RoS stands for Rain or Shine. It’s a label Castelli give to their most advanced products that excel in both dry and wet conditions. For dry conditions, you’re looking for comfort along with breathability to prevent you from getting wet and chilled from the inside. But with wet-weather clothing, you’re looking for protection that will help you stay warm by keeping the rain out and letting sweat escape. The Alpha RoS Light Jacket ticks both of those boxes. Both the front and back materials represent a significant step forward in rain protection. These fabrics are used with reduced seaming, and seam sealing where necessary.

Lillee FYI I have a waredrobe full of Castelli. This jacket is very versitile, it has an inner liner that you can unzip if it's too hot and zip up for when it is really cold. The Goretex material really cuts wind down and repells water. Have not ridden it in wet weather yet but with a thermal underlayer and this jacket I think you could ride right down to 0 degrees quite comfortably. The colours are very bright so you will definitely be seen. I like how there are holes at the bottom of the rear pockets so water can escape. I also like how it has a drop tail and a valuables zip pocket, although making that pocket entirely waterproof would have been nice. Arm length is nice and long which will come in handy in mid winter to go over gloves. More prominent rear reflectivity would have also been nice, can't have too much reflectiveness Castelli if you are reading!
Mr Killeen Excellent jersey, highly recommend. First time buying castelli. Will buy again.
Mr McPartlin Great jacket for winter use when combined with a base layer and for spring use. Water repellency excellent, been tested through Storm Ciara, Dennis and Jorge. Very good wind blocking performance too
Andrew Rain or shine, well certainly lives up to this title. All the storms in the uk plus the occasional glimpse of sun and this joy has batted every one off. The Light is ideal for me with a good thermal base. Highly recommend. I am 5’7” 80kg and XL is a perfect fit. Purchased bright orange and it’s smart but very noticeable perfect for grey days.
Mr Paton Alpha ROS jacket met all my expectations . Great windbreaker, light weight yet warm on chilly days . Currently riding in 5-7 C days and stay warm with only base layer on . You cant go wrong with this jacket .
mike Superb jacket at a great price from Merlin, I bought the orange which I like and is visible, this jacket is perfect for those days when the weather is unpredictable and you want to keep the pace without sweating as much as you would in a full waterproof
Mr TALBI Very nice jacket, perfect against wind and very light ! Good choice
Smokesreen I used this for the first time last week on a short 70km ride that had a bit of everything (cold, rain, sunshine, wind, mountains and flats). I used a light merino wool base layer underneath in 8degC temperatures and it kept me warm enough most of the time. As always with Castelli gear, it's exceptionally tight fitting (and short at the front). Luckily, I'm built like a racing snake so I can fit into the S size, but you definitely need to wear bib shorts with Castelli gear: if you use cycling shorts, you're sure to show off some gut, no matter how slim you are! It's well made and the pockets at the back work well (unlike the ones on my Perfetto, which are too elasticated making things difficult to put into them). I particularly like the front-side pocket on the left, which is really handy for keeping a set of keys or payment card rather than having to fumble around in the back pockets. Initially, I though that the pocket position would irritate me as I rode, but it didn't affect my riding at all. I wish more cycling jackets incorporated this side pocket feature. Can't really say how waterproof the jacket is because we only faced light drizzle, and I donned my Castelli Ultralegerra rainjacket for that part of the ride. The only slight gripe I have is with the colour/design: the black back panel looks a bit weird when worn. Can't really understand why they didn't make the whole back panel orange (for better visibility and aesthetics). Overall I have to rate this 5 stars because I can't find fault with it functionally or from a build-quality perspective.
stephen Great comfortable jacket. I've worn it in light showers, windy and chilly conditions so far and I've stayed warm and dry.
Mr wareham Great jacket I would love another one. I’ve not stopped wearing it 👌
Mr johnston Good product . Castelli comes up small though and the 2xl was the size required to fit me. I’m normally a large or sometimes xl with other brands.
Mr Cannondalelover Qualità e finiture sopra la media, ottimo capo indicato per svariate condizioni climatiche. Il prezzo di merlino bike... imbattibile!
Dr Martin Excellent jacket for UK winter rides. Needs thermal base on sub zero days but ideal with just a normal jersey for 5-12 C days. Snug fit - I'm 5'11 / 75kg and large good fit for me.
Mr Pérez Higuera Great jacket and excellent quality. 106cm chest and XL fits perfect.
Andrew A Brilliant piece of kit - been wearing it in temperatures lower than recommended and found it both warm and comfortable - really great jacket
Mr Moore Great piece of kit, does what it says. Order at least a size up with castelli as they come up small.
Taejin This is one of the most versatile cycling jacket that I own. It is breathable and warm and waterproof. Highly recommended.
GMP Well done Castelli & Merlin. This is a great piece of kit at a cracking price. Worn 1st time on a just above freezing in the Scottish Highlands, performed above expectations with only a merino long sleeve baselayer.
Mr Wood I have been impressed with the quality of the jacket having bought it based on good reviews. I have used it down to 6 degrees with a base layer and it is kept me comfortably warm. I am 6’1 and 14 stone and the 2XXL was the right size choice. Not used in the rain yet but expect it to perform to high standards. Great jacket.
Mr Lin very good quality and comfortable while riding. also stylish. I bought M according to the size chart but It's a bit tight, so you may want to size up.
Mr THOMPSON Standard Castelli! Great piece of kit. Have worn it out in 3/4 degrees and with a good base layer stayed warm. Not hot or cold just warm... As it should be! Makes cycling this time of year fun.
Mr keyes Believe the hype!! Very light jacket but no issues with warmth just wearing one baselayer from 2-7 degrees, can overheat if it gets any warmer on climbs. Been in a few showers, no problem at all. very well made, race fit. I'm 5 8 and 68kgs, small fits perfectly. Bought at amazing price, fresh in orange, will be worn throughout winter.
Claudio Great cool weather jacket. Inner can be unzipped on warmer days. Have used in range 6 to 12 degC on fast rides and have no complaints.
Dr Downer Excellent product for long rides on those mixed weather mornings where it starts cold and warms up.
Gabor from Budapest The same beautiful quality garment than the deep-winter Alpha ROS Jacket. The construction is the same, only the polar inner jacket is thinner. Love for the first sight :-)
Alyosha The best jacket money can buy. A little on the small side.
