Continuing our irregular series of meeting the Merlin Irregulars. Sometimes it’s interesting meeting the people who work behind the scenes of a bike shop (hey, sometimes it’s not).

We vainly thought that you’d like to find out a bit more about the staff at Merlin Cycles.

Mike is in charge of our Returns Dept. He’s can usually be found in his lair, being nice to customers and nasty to distributors. Mike’s got your back.

Mike rides in to work pretty much every day on a couple of different bikes (not at the same time) depending on the weather. Or just his mood.

What bike do you ride most?

All of them.

How long have you been into cycling?

Since I was about 4 so… 37 years

What was your first proper bike?

A Purple Raleigh Chopper

Do you ride road, MTB or cyclocross?

Road and cycloross as I haven’t got an MTB at the moment.

How often do you ride a week?

3 or 4 times.

Where do you ride most?

Locally, Wigan, Bolton, Rivington etc.

What do you take with you on a ride?

Me , my bike, some basis tools to get me home and a phone.

What are your favourite cycling components?

Ones that don’t break!

What are your favourite cycling clothes?

Castelli. Specifically the Gabba 2 jersey and the Sorpasso bib tights.

Have you ever raced?

Yes, MTB XC, DH and Dual Slalom. Never on the road.

Who are your cycling heroes?

Jason McRoy, John Tomac, Lance Armstrong.

Do you have any interests outside of cycling?

Having a beer and spending time with the family.

Do you Strava?

Yes. It’s childish but like to know if I’m faster than my mates.

Are you a fervent user of Social Media?

Yes, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Why do you ride?

To get out the house as I don’t watch TV much and it keeps me out of the pub. And to stop me getting fat as I’m from Wigan and enjoy a pie or two.
